I've tried to group these books so that you have an easy way of choosing. Some are particular to certain issues--addiction, women's issues, creativity, support. Others are more general, to give both you as the one with ADD, and those in your life who need more information.

NEW: Journeys through ADDulthood, Sari Solden

Adult AD/HD Michele Novotni, Ph.D. and Thoumas A. Whiteman, Ph.D.This is a wonderful book for adults just finding out that the base line of their hiccups in life is ADHD, giving incredible support to BOTH the ADDer and the family, with wonderful stories, suggestions, and rock-solid system development

Great First Reads:

This first group of books include classics and newer ones. These are the books to read when you first discover you have ADD, or think you have ADD, or want to know more about the subject, to understand the situation someone else is experiencing. They're in no particular order!

Driven to Distraction Edward J. Hallowell, MD and John J Ratey, MD Start here--it affirms that you're not alone! This, and the companion volume below, are still two of the easiest to understand and assimilate.

Answers to Distraction Edward J Hallowell, MD and John J Ratey, MD. This not only puts a positive spin on ADD, but gives you some concrete ideas and help to normalize your life

Attention Deficit Disorder: A Different Perception Thom Hartmann. This gentle man is a fantastic advocate for people with ADD! This particular book changes the perception from damaged goods to differently perceiving, and gives positive insights into why ADD is a positive thing to experience!

Thom Hartmann's Complete Guide to ADHD Help, hope, reassurance, and suggestions to help you achieve your goals in life and daily living. This is a great book for all the non-ADDers in your life who might not otherwise understand.

You Mean I'm Not Lazy, Stupid, or Crazy? Kate Kelly and Peggy Ramundo. If this book doesn't make you laugh, while you check to see if the authors are in the room with you, please check your laughter quotient!

Women With Attention Deficit Disorder Sari Solden, MS, MFCC. Any woman who reads this will probably think Sari's been living with them secretly. Extremely reassuring for those of us who wonder if we can ever accomplish anything....

For Support, Reassurance, and Systems Building help:

The ADDed Dimension Kate Kelly and Peggy Ramundo. A wonderful book, pick it up, read a bit for help, put it down and be recharged! It's even organized so you can quickly find the bit you are looking for.

Conquering Chronic Disorganization Judith Kolberg. This reaffirms that there are filing systems other than A--Z, ways to clean the garage without using a backhoe and dump truck, and other systems that are uniquely helpful!

Healing ADD Thom Hartmann. In this, Thom emphasizes the importance and impact of languaging on how we see ourselves, others, the daily and other tasks that sometimes try to overwhelm everyone.

ADD and Creativity Lynn Weiss. Think of some of your favorite actors, artists, writers, etc., and discover what you all have in common

Connect Edward J Hallowell, MD Steps to take to make your soul sing, make connections that bring joy to your life, and nurture the essence of self

What Does Everyone Else Know That I Don't? Michelle Novotni, Ph.D. A wonderful, happy book that explains why an ADDer's social skills are sometimes out of sync with the rest of society, and suggestions and thoughts on improving these skills so we shine!

The Link Between ADD and Addiction Wendy Richardson, MA Based on solid evidence, and in-depth study of the situation, Wendy guides the reader to positive action, and out of denial--which is where many such cases unfortunately fall.

For the non-Adder in your life!

ADDers can read these too. Some explain the neurology of ADD, alternative ways of dealing with ADD, or a fairly linear explanation of the ADD experience.

Out Of The Fog Kevin R. Murphy and Suzanne LeVert This book, by the head of the Adult ADHD Clinic at the University of Massachusetts Medical Center, explains the need to change perception of ADD from "won't"--as in 'he just won't try hard enough"--to "can't"--as in 'he doesn't process the information that way. Is there another way to present it?'

Attention Deficit Disorder in Adults: A Comprehensive Guide to Research, Diagnosis, and Treatment edited by Kathleen G. Nadeau, Ph.D. Show this to everyone--physician, family member, therapist, teacher, counselor--who doesn't understand or believe in adult ADD.

User's Guide to the Brain John J.Ratey, MD A great explanation of the neurobiology behind ADD, written so that it's comprehensible! John includes ways to cope, communicate with your doctor or therapist, and explains you to your significant other!

Healing ADD: the Breakthrough Program That Allows you to See and Heal the 6 Types of ADD Daniel G Amen, MD New to the market, with some alternative ideas about the root causes, medication effects, and distinctions between several of his subtypes of ADD.

Attention Deficit Disorder in Adults: Practical Help for Sufferers and Their Spouses Lynn Weiss

When you find yourself with more than one copy of a book, please donate it to your local library! That way others can learn, and you can always find at least one copy!
